A number of funding programs specifically offer support to graduate students at the dissertation stage. Below we have listed a number of such programs for minority students. Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list; you will probably need to do some research on your own in order to find the right program for you. Most require that you finish your dissertation during the award period.

American Association of University Women Educational Foundation
American Dissertation Fellowships

Available to women pursuing Ph.D. in all fields of study (excluding engineering), the AAUW American Dissertation Fellowships provides a stipend for individuals in the final year of doctoral program.  

Consortium for a Strong Minority Presence at Liberal Arts Colleges

The Consortium now invites applications for dissertation fellowships and post-doctoral fellowships from those who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents who will contribute to increasing the diversity of member colleges by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximizing the educational benefits of diversity and/or increasing the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of students.

Ceasar E. Chavez Dissertation Fellowship for Latino/a Scholars
Charles A. Eastman Dissertation Fellowship for Native American Scholars
Thurgood Marshall Dissertation Fellowship for African American Scholars.

Offers three dissertation fellowships to minority students in final stages of the Ph.d: The Ceasar E. Chavez Dissertation Fellowship for Latino/a scholars; The Charles A. Eastman Dissertation Fellowship for Native American Scholars; and The Thurgood Marshall Dissertation Fellowship for African American Scholars. Each provides a stipend, office space, library privileges and computing facilities plus a research allowance.

Programs goals are to enable scholars to complete their dissertation, and encourage minorities to teach at university level. Stipend, office space, library privileges and housing assistance provided. Fellows are expected to also do a limited amount of teaching.

The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships seek to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

To facilitate this goal the Fellowship grants awards at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and, Postdoctoral levels to students who demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity and a desire to enter the professoriate.

The University of Notre Dame
Erskine A. Peters Dissertation Year Fellowship

The fellowship period extends from August to May and carries a stipend of $25,000 plus a $2000 research budget.  The fellowship has two overall goals: (1) to enable outstanding African American doctoral candidates at the ABD level to devote their full energies to the completion of the dissertation, and (2) to provide opportunities for African American scholars to experience life at the University of Notre Dame, a major Catholic research institution.

Provides a doctoral scholars awards for scholars who are just beginning (within the first year) their doctoral program or are expecting admission before the academic year begins, and dissertation year awards for scholars who have completed all course work comprehensive/preliminary exams and defended their dissertation prospectus, or will before the academic year begins.
