E. Pendleton Herring Political Art Collection Endowment
The Herring Collection came into being through generous gifts from Pen Herring. Over the past forty years, he donated upwards of thirty pieces to form the core of a growing body of works on paper that celebrate profound democratic ideals or satirically acknowledge society's occasional failure to live up to these lofty ends. The collection includes engravings or lithographs by George Caleb Bingham focusing American elections; William Hogarth's series on corruption in 18th century English elections; Henri Monnier's critical view of bureaucratic behavior; and the satirical political cartoons of Keppler, Dalrymple and Gillam featured in the pages of Puck during the late 19th century.
Today, the Herring Endowment supports the expansion and maintenance of the Herring Collection.
