Annual Meeting Workshop for Department Chairs

The 2008 Workshop for Political Science Department Chairs was dedicated to issues faced by chairs when addressing pressures to develop interdisciplinary programs and curricula. These range from substantive disciplinary implications to questions regarding teaching undergraduate and graduate students, labor markets for faculty and students, faculty lines, departmental resources, relations with deans and other units, as well as the external funding environment. Sponsored by the APSA Departmental Services Committee, the Workshop brought together a panel of political scientists and outside speakers with wide-ranging experience and perspectives on such issues. 55 department chairs were in attendance and engaged the speakers in a lively Q&A after the presentations were completed. A full transcript of the session will be mailed to all member departments in Fall 2008.
Panelists included:
Virginia Sapiro, Dean, College of Arts & Sciences, Boston University Carol Van Hartesveldt, National Science Foundation, Program Director, Integrative Graduate Education & Research Traineeship Neal Beck, Chair, Department of Politics, New York University Lynne Ford, Chair, Political Science Department, College of Charleston
Registration for the Workshop for Department Chairs is complimentary for departments who are members of the APSA Departmental Services Program, and $40 per person for non-DSP members and additional guests.
