Dates: November 18-22, 2009 The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) welcomes proposals for papers, roundtables, workshops and poster presentations at its 20th Biennial meeting to be held in San Diego, California, November 18-22, 2009. ACSUS is a multidisciplinary organization that seeks to encourage the study of Canada and U.S.-Canadian relations. We welcome submissions from academics and professionals in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, business, education and the natural and life sciences. The theme for this biennial in “North by Northwest, South by Southwest, Canada and the United States: Past, Present and Future”. All proposals should have a distinctive Canadian focus, but we also encourage submissions that consider Canada in a comparative context. We are particularly interested in receiving submissions that examine Canada within a Western Hemispheric or global setting. Proposals that seek to explore contemporary issues of concern such as borders, migration, trade, technology, the environment and education are especially welcomed. The conference will take place at the Westin Gaslamp Hotel in the heart of the city and close to its waterfront. We anticipate a high level of interest in the San Diego Biennial so we encourage you to submit your proposal in a timely fashion. Conference Sections include: Anthropology, Sociology and First Nations; Arts—Visual and Performing; Business, Trade and Economics; Gender, Identity and Diversity; Geography, Resources, Environment; History; Border Issues and Migration; Foreign Policy and Defense; Literature in English; Literature in French; Politics and Public Policy; The North; Quebec and the French Presence in North America; Education; Canada in Comparative Perspective; Life Sciences and Technology. Poster Sessions are also planned. Please use the appropriate submission forms. The deadline for submissions is November 20, 2008.
PROPOSALS Submissions must be made using the appropriate submission forms available for download at www.acsus.org or by request at info@acsus.org. Please complete: Form A (participant information—required of everyone) and Form B (abstracts for individual papers or poster sessions, pre-organized panels, roundtables or workshops). Email submissions are preferred. Papers or posters should reflect original scholarship in any discipline of Canadian studies and should be directed toward encouraging additional research and discussion in the field. Panels are allotted 90 minutes and will usually contain three to four presentations. Each paper presenter will be allotted 15 minutes. Panel discussants will be accorded a similar amount of time. We anticipate offering over 120 separate panels during the course of the conference. At the San Diego Biennial, authors will be limited to presenting one paper only. This will allow as many different presenters as possible within the format of the program. However, all paper presenters may also serve as a chair or discussant on another panel or on a roundtable or workshop. No one will be permitted more than two substantive slots on the program. PRE-ORGANIZED PANELS, ROUNDTABLES or WORKSHOPS: Proposals for pre-formed panels, roundtables or workshops may be submitted. Such proposals should have a common focus or theme that links the separate presentations. Proposals for complete panels, roundtables or workshops should include information on all participants. Pre-organized sessions may be either accepted or rejected in their entirety or may be modified by the appropriate section chair to meet conference needs. POSTERS: At the San Diego Biennial Conference, ACSUS will be featuring a number of poster sessions. This will provide conference participants with an opportunity to engage in informal discussion with new and established scholars during the scheduled program coffee breaks. These poster presentations will focus either on a section theme or on topics not addressed under these headings. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity to highlight either research or teaching efforts in progress or to receive suggestions or feedback on possible new undertakings. Posters will remain on display through the conference. Please consider participating in such a poster sessions.
All proposals for papers, roundtables, workshops and posters—whether submitted individually or as part of a pre-organized group—must be accompanied by a participant information sheet (Form A) and an abstract (Form B) of some 200-400 words—single spaced. The abstract should state the thesis or significance of the submission, its methodology and goals. We would prefer that all proposals be sent by e-mail to info@acsus.org. All necessary forms are available at www.acsus.org under the San Diego Biennial Conference heading. All materials must be received no later than November 20, 2008.
REGISTRATION: All conference presenters must be pre-registered for the San Diego Biennial by September 15, 2009. Failure to do so will result in being dropped from the program. All participants can pre-register for the conference at www.acsus.org beginning March 15, 2009. DISTRIBUTION OF PAPERS: Every paper presenter is required to send a copy of a working draft—not necessarily the finished paper—to the chair, discussant and other panel members by October 18, 2009. Completed papers or working drafts that have not been distributed by that date may be dropped from the program. SERVICE AS CHAIR or DISCUSSANT: Those who wish to perform these important roles at the conference may submit their names and disciplinary interests on Form A. AUDIO-VISUAL EQUIPMENT: We ask each presenter to seriously assess their need for A/V equipment. Should you conclude that some form of A/V equipment is integral to your presentation, please identify your requirements on Form A. Please note that participants requesting an extensive amount of such equipment may be charged a rental fee.
