Sigma Zeta Chapter, University of Idaho Example of Winning Chapter Activity Grant Proposal

Dear Pi Sigma Alpha Chapter Awards Committee,

PROPOSAL:
In order to build membership and increase the visibility of Pi Sigma Alpha at the University of Idaho and the Moscow community, we propose inviting a nationally know speaker who will lecture on state health care politics and policies. because state and local government officials and the general academic communities of the University of Idaho and Washington State University will also benefit from the speaker's visit, this project falls under the activity grant competition's society and service categories.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We intend to reach out to four separate groups: political science graduate and undergraduate students, members of Pi Sigma Alpha, university faculty and students in general and community leaders.

In order to expose political science students, both graduate and undergraduate, to the types of research being done by political science professors, we plan to invite Dr. Charles Barrilleaux, professor of political science at Florida State University, to speak at the University of Idaho in Spring 2000 Semester. Dr. Barrilleaux, who has written several articles and book chapters on state health care issues, will be invited to discuss his research and answer questions. He will speak to the spring course "State Health Politics and Policies," in which many of his articles are required reading.

In addition to speaking to this class, Dr. Barrilleaux, will be invited to discuss his research on state health care policies and other policy choices with all of the students in political science at an afternoon lecture. We anticipate that Dr. Barrilleaux will also speak at neighboring Washington State University as well. Both of these events will be publicized on campus and in the student newspaper.

Finally, to increase community outreach, Dr. Barrilleaux will be invited to speak to local community leaders, including members of the Latah County Health District. Also invited are members of the Latah County Commission, Moscow City Council and other local health entities.

This opportunity will not only benefit students, both graduate and undergraduate, who are already studying political science, but all students and faculty at the University of Idaho. It also will provide an opportunity for Pi Sigma Alpha members to increase the visibility of the local chapter in the Moscow community.
