APSA Resources and Updates

In recognition of the health, social and economic changes that are now taking place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, APSA is taking steps to provide relevant, up to date resources for our members, keep our staff safe, and prepare for the coming months.

Resources
  • APSA Educate  We’ve been working for some time on a platform for our community to post and share resources around teaching.  Due to the current global crisis, which has significantly increased the prevalence of online teaching, we’ve decided to launch a fast-tracked version of the platform. Starting now, you can easily search for, submit, and save educational materials to your personal library on APSA Educate. We’re calling this a beta version because we are continuing to develop enhanced features, but our hope is that the platform can provide needed resources and space for mutual support as educational institutions around the world adopt digital learning strategies. We invite you to upload resources you think may be useful for your peers. We recognize that political science faculty are busy supporting family, students, and colleagues and that some may not be able to participate at this time. Our aim is to create a space where faculty can share resources and support one another at a time and in a way that best works for them.

  • Many college and university campuses have transitioned to online instruction.  APSA has compiled a list of resources to aid faculty in moving to online teaching and supporting students. These resources can be found by clicking here. We will continue to provide links to more teaching and online resources in the coming weeks. If you have a resource you’d like to share with your colleagues, please  email us

  • APSA Preprints is a free-to-access prepublication platform dedicated to early research outputs in political science and related disciplines. It offers rapid turnaround times and allows for quick dissemination of working papers especially as journal review times increase. Additionally, scholars have already started posting research around COVID-19.

  • APSA Connect provides Organized Section members an opportunity to stay connected with colleagues.   Members are able to engage with one another through sharing best practices and announcements through each Organized Section’s APSA Connect Forum

APSA Supports Accommodations for Tenure and Promotion, Work Deadlines, and Faculty Workloads for the Political Science Community
. Like many disciplines, we especially encourage college and university tenure and promotion committees, and administrators of undergraduate and graduate programs, to keep in mind that many scholars will find it difficult to advance their research and other professional activities under current conditions and may require more time for their work.  We recommend that higher education decision-makers keep these longer time-frames in mind as they decide how to make accommodations in tenure and promotion time clocks, student work deadlines, contingent faculty workloads, and other review processes.  Read the statement.

Annual Meeting

  • Update: The 2020 APSA Annual Meeting & Exhibition Transitioning to Virtual Format: The safety of the American Political Science Association (APSA) community is our top priority. In light of the current situation surrounding COVID-19, we will deliver our 116th American Political Science Association’s Annual Meeting & Exhibition, scheduled for September 10-13, 2020 in San Francisco, as a virtual digital event.  We very much look forward to bringing together the APSA community to learn and connect in this new virtual format.

The APSA Annual Meeting helps create a vibrant and sustainable community for attendees and the discipline. We recognize the essential role of the annual meeting is more important than ever, and the need to bring our scholarly community together, share the latest research and scholarship, provide opportunities for scholars to learn about the job market, and be able to network with colleagues in their areas of expertise. Learn more about the virtual APSA Annual Meeting here.

Journals

  • Politics & Gender has published special virtual series on gender, politics, and the coronavirus pandemic. These short papers were evaluated for rapid publication on the basis of: (1) the rigor and clarity of the research, (2) the potential for the manuscript to make an immediate contribution to academic knowledge, public discussion, and/or policy-making, and (3) the extent to which the manuscript illuminates the gendered dimensions of political and/or policy responses or impact. The articles are Open Access and freely available.

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambridge University Press paused the printing of journals starting with the May 2020 issue of the American Political Science Review. Cambridge University Press has now resumed printing and if you have previously selected receiving your journals in print, you should be receiving the next issue/back issues of your journals in the coming weeks.
  • As an APSA member, you maintain access to APSA journals online through your APSA profile. Benefits of accessing APSA journals online includes access to the Cambridge digital archive, providing all issues from the 1900’s – present, as well as FirstView articles. In an effort to reduce APSA’s carbon footprint, we ask that you re-evaluate whether you would like to continue receiving APSA journals in print and update your settings by clicking on Journal Delivery Preferences on your APSA profile: https://www.apsanet.org/User-Home

Applicants for the Special Projects Fund should expect that the notifications should go out in early summer, rather than April, as earlier expected. For applicants submitting proposals with research plans that may need to adjusted or postponed due to travel restrictions and the need for social distancing (for instance, proposals that include international travel or extended participant observation in densely populated areas), we will work with you to adjust APSA grant deadlines to meet these extraordinary circumstances, and to support you as best we can in conducting your important research. If you are an existing APSA grantee with questions, please consult the  staff directory and contact your relevant program director with any questions you may have.

  • Update on the 2020 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute
Over the past few weeks, APSA has been in close contact with Dr. Paula D. McClain, the Dean of the Graduate School at Duke University and the director of the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute, to determine the feasibility of hosting RBSI in light of the spread of the coronavirus. At this time, all summer programming at Duke has been cancelled including the 2020 APSA RBSI program. While we very much regret this outcome, APSA understands the responsibility of Duke University to the health and safety of all students, faculty, and employees.  diversityprograms@apsanet.org.

APSA is currently identifying supplemental engagement opportunities for the accepted 2020 RBSI Class. We remain committed to supporting this strong group of scholars as they prepare to pursue doctoral work in the discipline. If you are an alumnus of RBSI and have the interest and ability to mentor a RBSI student this summer, please email the APSA Diversity & Inclusion team at
