2025 Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants

The American Political Science Association is pleased to announce the Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant (DDRIG) Awardees for 2025. The APSA DDRIG program provides support to enhance and improve the conduct of doctoral dissertation research in political science. Awards support basic research which is theoretically derived and empirically oriented.

Oguzhan Alkan

Oguzhan Alkan is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from Sabancı University and a B.A. in Economics from Boğaziçi University, both in Turkey.

Clayton Becker

Clayton Becker is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science at UCLA. Before beginning his PhD, Clayton received bachelor’s degrees in Political Science-Economics from Columbia University and Social Sciences with a Concentration in Law from SciencesPo Paris as part of their Dual BA Program. In addition to his PhD, he is also pursuing a master’s degree in Statistics through UCLA’s Department of Statistics and Data Science.

Lucas Borba

Lucas Borba is a PhD candidate in Political Science at Vanderbilt University. He holds a M.A. in political science from the Federal University of Pernambuco and a B.A. in history from the University of Pernambuco, both in Brazil.

Akash Chopra

Akash Chopra is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Boston College. Akash holds an M.A. in Analytical Political Economy from Duke University and a B.A. in Economics and International Relations from Boston University.

Haley Daarstad

Haley Daarstad is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Davis. Prior to UC Davis, Haley received a B.S. in Political Science and New Media Communications from Oregon State University.

Rex Weiye Deng

Rex Weiye Deng a PhD candidate at the Department of Political Science, Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to his PhD, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Global China Studies (GCS) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a Bachelor of Art in Economics from Waseda University in 2020.

Alper Sukru Gencer

Alper Sukru Gencer is a PhD candidate at New York University. He holds a BA in International Relations and Economics from Koç University, Türkiye, and an MA in Political Science from Koç University and Washington University in St. Louis. His research has been supported by the NYU George Downs Grant and the Identities & Ideologies (I&I) Research Group.

Simal Gerot

Simal Gerot is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Iowa. She holds a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Psychology from Bilkent University and an M.A. in International Relations and Political Science from Koç University.

Natalie Jones-Kerwin

Natalie Jones-Kerwin (Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa) is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Iowa State University. Her work has been recognized with numerous fellowships, grants, and national honors, including support from the National Science Foundation, the Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment, and the American Political Science Association.

Benjamin Krick

Benjamin Krick is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Duke University. Prior to his PhD, he earned an MS in Political Science from the University of Utah and a BA in Arabic and Middle East Studies from the University of Arkansas.

Jérémie Langlois

Jérémie Langlois is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Prior to UW-Madison, he received an M.A. in Arab Studies from Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) and a B.A. in Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies from Fordham University.

Francy Luna Diaz

Francy Luna Díaz is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in Political Science at the University of Michigan. She holds a B.A. in Law and Political Science from the University of Arizona, where she graduated summa cum laude with the highest honors and received the Robie Gold Medal Award. She also earned an A.A. from Pima Community College. Her research has been supported by prestigious fellowships, including the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, the Converse and Miller Fellowship, the Hanes Walton Jr. Fellowship, the Garth Taylor Fellowship in Public Opinion, and the Center for the Education of Women Gutsy Broad Fund Fellowship. Luna Díaz has also received competitive research grants such as the Spring Centennial Grant and the Anti-Racism Graduate Research Grant. She is thankful for the support of the American Political Science Foundation through its Dissertation Research Improvement Grant, which funds the main data collection for her book-style dissertation.

Jerry Jie Min

Jerry Jie Min is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science in the Department of Government and an A.M. candidate in the Department of Statistics at Harvard University. Jerry holds an M.A. from Stanford University and a B.A. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Isabella C. Montini

Isabella C. Montini is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds an MA in Latin American Studies from Stanford University and a BA in Political Science and Sociology from Humboldt University in Berlin. Her research has been supported by the Berkeley Institute for International Studies, the Department of Global Metropolitan Studies, the Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative, the Center for Effective Global Action, the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the American Political Science Association, and Innovations for Poverty Action’s Peace & Recovery Initiative.

Emirhan Ozkan

Emirhan Özkan is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Rutgers University. In addition to APSA DDRIG, his work is generously supported by the Research in Political Psychology Laboratory at Rutgers, and the Polarization Research Lab. Emirhan holds a BA in Political Science and International Relations from İstanbul Şehir University, and MA degrees from Sabanci University, and Temple University.

Hannah Radner

Hannah Radner is a PhD Candidate in Political Science at Syracuse University. Prior to pursuing a PhD, Hannah worked in diplomatic training and orientation for six years at the United States Department of State’s National Foreign Affairs Training Center. She earned a B.A. in International Affairs and M.A. in Global Communication from The George Washington University.

Aditya Sarkar

Aditya Sarkar is a Ph.D. candidate at the Fletcher School, at Tufts University. Aditya has an undergraduate degree in law (B.A. LL.B. (Hons)) from the National Law School of India University in Bangalore, India and a M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. Aditya is qualified as a lawyer in India and in England and Wales. Prior to beginning his graduate studies, Aditya consulted for the World Bank, the International Labour Organization, and Open Society Foundations, and advised the Governments of Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia on developing National Employment Policies.

Florian Sichart

Florian Sichart is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Politics Department at Princeton University. Florian’s work is supported by The Mamdouha S. Bobst Center for Peace and Justice, the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, and the Initiative for Data-Driven Social Science. Prior to Princeton, he completed his BSc at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Tiago Tasca

Tiago Tasca is a Ph.D. candidate in Politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Tiago received his B.A. in International Relations from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Brazil) and his M.A. in International Relations from the Universidade de Brasília (Brazil).

Allison Verrilli

Allison Verrilli is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to her doctoral studies, Allison earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame and worked as a paralegal at a civil rights law firm in Washington, D.C.

Jingding Wang

Jingding Wang is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Political Science at Syracuse University. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yunnan University and a Master of Public Administration from Rutgers University.

Meghna Yadav

Meghna Yadav is a PhD candidate in the Department of Politics at New York University. Meghna holds a BA (Hons) in Economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi and an MA in Economics from Delhi School of Economics.
