Past Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI) Scholars

2025 RBSI Scholars

The Ralph Bunche Summer Institute Program (RBSI) is an annual, intensive five-week program held at Duke University under the direction of Dr. Paula D. McClain. RBSI is designed to introduce aspiring political scientists to the world of doctoral study. This is the 39th year of the program. The 2025 institute is being held May 25 – June 26, 2025. 2024 RBSI Scholars

The 2024 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the virtual RBSI program from  May 26 – June 27, 2024, under the direction of  Dr. Paula D. McClain. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two online graduate level courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. Scholars also participated in research writing sessions, professional development sessions, GRE prep courses, and a virtual graduate school fair.


2023 RBSI Scholars

The 2023 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the virtual RBSI program from  May 28 – June 29, 2023, under the direction of  Dr. Paula D. McClain. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two online graduate level courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. Scholars also participated in research writing sessions, professional development sessions, GRE prep courses, and a virtual graduate school fair.

The 2022 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the virtual RBSI program from May 29 – June 30, 2022, under the direction of  Dr. Paula D. McClain. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two online graduate level courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. Scholars also participated in research writing sessions, professional development sessions, GRE prep courses, and a virtual graduate school fair.

The 2021 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the virtual RBSI program from May 23, 2021 – June 23, 2021. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two online graduate level courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. Scholars also participated in research writing sessions, professional development sessions, GRE prep courses, and a virtual graduate school fair.


2020 RBSI Scholars

The 2020 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the RBSI program from June 22, 2020 – July 17, 2020. It was necessary to create the virtual program, because of the cancellation of the in person 2020 Ralph Bunche Summer Institute (RBSI), due to COVID-19. The virtual sessions included talks by faculty members, scholars, and RBSI Alumni. The Bunche Fellows also participated in research writing sessions, professional development sessions, GRE prep courses, and a virtual graduate school fair.


2019 RBSI Scholars

The 2019 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the RBSI program at Duke University, from May 27, 2019 – June 28, 2019. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. The RBSI Recruitment Fair was held on June 15, 2019, and the RBSI Closing Banquet was held on June 27, 2019.


2018 RBSI Scholars

The 2018 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the RBSI program at Duke University, from May 27, 2018 – June 28, 2018. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. The RBSI Recruitment Fair was held on June 15, 2018, and the RBSI Closing Banquet was held on June 27, 2018.


2017 RBSI Scholars

The 2017 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the RBSI program at Duke University, from May 28, 2017 – June 29, 2017. The RBSI Scholars enrolled in two courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. The RBSI Recruitment Fair was held on June 16, 2017, and the RBSI Closing Banquet was held on June 28, 2017.


2016 RBSI Scholars

The 2016 undergraduate students are juniors in college and attended the RBSI program at Duke University, from May 29, 2016 – June 30, 2016. The RBSI Scholars were enrolled in two courses over the summer session and completed an independent research paper. On June 17, 2016, RBSI Program alumni, along with faculty members from PhD programs from around the country, met with the scholars at the RBSI Recruitment Fair. 2015 RBSI Scholars

The 2015 RBSI Program, under the direction of Paula D. McClain, was held at Duke University from June 1-July 2. Twelve students (read student bios) participated in the graduate and research methodology training program by completing two courses and conducting original political science research. Rodney Hero, APSA president, was on hand to speak at the closing banquet on July 2, 2015. Six RBSI Scholars were selected to present their research posters at the 2015 APSA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
