Jimmy Sullivan

In Honor and Memory of Jimmy Sullivan (CFP 2010-2011)

On behalf of the 2010–2011 cohort of APSA Congressional Fellows, it is our sad and solemn duty to note the passing of our friend, James “Jimmy” Sullivan of Brisbane, Australia. Jimmy’s death at the age of 44 is a shock to all of us.

15 years ago, Jimmy brought to Washington, D.C. a sharp intellect, a generous spirit, and that unmistakable Australian warmth that made everyone feel at ease. That accent from Down Under helped, too. Jimmy served the Office of Sen. Ron Wyden, D-OR. He cared deeply about public service—not as an abstract ideal, but as a daily practice of integrity, curiosity, and respect. He listened carefully, spoke thoughtfully, and always reminded us why our work mattered.

What set Jimmy apart was not just his insight, but his kindness. He made room for others. He checked in. He laughed easily and often. In a demanding environment, he chose decency again and again. Back home, he went to make a difference in the political sphere of Australia. He went on to serve as member of parliament representing his constituents with the same warmth and brilliance he brought to us. And while the fellowship cohort was spread across the globe, social media allowed us to follow the impact Jimmy sought to make, despite his apparent and terrifying personal health struggles.

Our year together was richer because of him. Each of us carries forward something of Jimmy—his perspective, his fairness, his steady belief in democratic institutions and in the people who sustain them.

We are grateful for his friendship, for his example, and for the time we shared. He will remain a cherished part of our cohort, always. Our thoughts are with his wife, his daughter, and everyone who loved him.
